Reproductive rights are a crucial part of the right to health and, simultaneously, of the right to family life. Some couples have challenges in conceiving a child, yet want to have their own child genetically. In this case, medically assisted (artificial) reproduction may be used.

In Latvia, women up to 40 years of age are entitled to State-paid medical insemination

The State budget covers:

  • procedures for the determination of infertility
  • specialist consultations
  • treatment of infertility (ovarian stimulation, egg puncture, etc.)
  • required diagnostics (e.g. ultrasound) during treatment
  • compensated medicines

note Until 2022, women up to 37 years of age were entitled to State-paid medical insemination. This threshold was increased to the age of 40 years as of 1 January 2022
