Health care during pregnancy

Your right to receive maternal health care during pregnancy is a part of your human right to health.

Your right to receive maternal health care during pregnancy is a component of your human right to health. Due to its importance, you may receive State-financed monitoring and medical assistance in Latvia. However, State-financed health care during pregnancy is provided only by doctors (gynaecologists/obstetricians and general practitioners (family doctors)) and midwives who are under contract with the National Health Service.

You may freely choose and also change, if necessary, the doctor or midwife who will monitor your pregnancy.

note In Latvia, the general requirements for monitoring and medical assistance during pregnancy are set out in the Procedures for Providing Maternity Assistance.

Medical assistance & State financing

In Latvia, the State provides fully financed medical assistance during pregnancy and childbirth, which means that you do not need to pay the patient co-payment for State-paid health care services related to pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

State-financed health care during pregnancy includes periodic consultations and medical examinations by a doctor or midwife, laboratory and diagnostic tests, ultrasound examinations of the mother and foetus in certain pregnancy weeks, as well as other specific necessary consultations and treatments, which are all set out in the Procedures for Providing Maternity Assistance.
