Access to healthcare during pregnancy & Childbirth

General requirements

The State must take appropriate steps to safeguard the health and lives of those within its territory. You have the right to access and receive the necessary medical assistance during pregnancy, childbirth and in the post-natal period.

Latvian law

During pregnancy, women are provided with free medical care that is necessary for the monitoring of the pregnancy and postnatal period. The medical assistance during childbirth in state hospitals is free as well, except for additional services or the level of comfort. Latvian law also does not provide for free medical assistance for childbirth at home.

You can learn more about the medical services connected to pregnancy and childbirth in this Guide and in the webpage of the National Health Service. You can also receive more information on various aspects of pregnancy in a special website created by the National Health Service and the Ministry of Health.
