What age must you be to stand for election?

In a similar way to voting, age restrictions constitute potentially the most significant restriction to the right to stand for election. Some jurisdictions may also cap the maximum age at which a person may run for office. Human rights law generally accepts age restrictions as a justifiable restriction of the right to stand for election, as they are geared towards ensuring the minimum of maturity required to fulfil the functions associated with the office.

important The legal age to stand for parliamentary (Saeima) and European Parliament elections in Latvia is 21 years. For local elections the legal age to run for office is 18 years of age.

note The regulation of the right to stand for election and the legal age to run for office differs from state to state.
